The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a new action-adventure game set in J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy universe. Some new information suggests that it could be released later this year.
In a new FAQ post on the official Steam page for the game, Daedalic Entertainment has answered some important questions from fans. There’s a lot to dig into here so strap yourselves in. Firstly, the game is considered to be a canon adaptation of The Lord of the Rings source material. Middle-earth Enterprises, the company that holds the rights to much of the franchise, has approved all elements of the game.
The developer has confirmed that setting of the game will take place in parallel to the early chapters of The Lord of the Rings. Specifically, it will depict events like Gollum’s time in Mordor, when he was held captive by Sauron, and his interrogation at the hands of Gandalf. Daedalic Entertainment states that little is known about Gollum’s story in this timeframe, which provided an ideal setting for the game.
Gollum will be voiced by Wayne Forester, and his design is a unique interpretation of the character that stays true to the source material. This applies to the overall story too. The developer notes that the game is not related to other games in The Lord of the Rings franchise, and it will focus on the story that was told in the original books.
Daedalic Entertainment is targeting a Fall 2022 release date for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum and more details about its gameplay are coming soon. With that in mind, perhaps there’s a chance that it could appear at Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest showcase on June 9th.
Finally, the developer says that it will update the Stream FAQ with more questions and details in the coming weeks.
