Bungie has outlined the hows and whys of Mercy Rule 2.0 for Destiny.
Remember, this is for Destiny 2.0, so everyone who has the game, whether they purchase The Taken King or not, are now subject to these changed rules.
Bungie has been collecting data on their matchmaking, and identified that particularly bad matchups come up in spite of their algorithms. Statistically speaking, these matches are insignificant, but Bungie saw it fit to find ways to alleviate them anyway,
So, Mercy Rule 2.0 will seek out these unbalanced matchups if they happen and end them early. Lord Shaxx will call it out, and join in progress will be disabled as the clock resets to 0:10 seconds. The match ends normally afterwards, and, if you stuck around, you will get your end of match rewards before returning to matchmaking.
The rule is active in all team playlists with two exceptions. Elimination ends quickly and gives players chances for a comeback, so Bungie has decided it doesn’t need it. Trials of Osiris also does not have it, since everyone gets multiple targets with a score limit of around 25 kills and below.
Bungie also promises a No Mercy achievement for good players adversely affected by the new rule.
