Playing Borderlands through the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility mode does not allow you to take screenshots or capture gameplay footage via the console’s built-in game capture features, according to a Microsoft representative on the Xbox forums (the thread in question no longer appears for some reason).
“This is expected,” the Microsoft representative said of Xbox One Preview Program users’ complaints that the aforementioned functions were not working. “Unfortunately, recording/screenshots are turned off for Borderlands.” The representative cited a “licensing” issue for the unfortunate drawback.
Borderlands, along with all of its DLC, was announced yesterday to be a part of the initial 100 or so games available to play through backwards compatibility on the Xbox One when the feature officially launches later this year. Currently, members of the Xbox One Preview Program are testing the highly-anticipated feature of the Xbox One’s future update and, when Borderlands was added to the current slate of backwards compatible games, Preview Program members noticed that the screenshot and gameplay capture functions were not working even though those same features work just fine with other backwards compatible titles.
It is unclear what specific licensing issue, or multitude of issues, caused these features to not be available. Speaking to GameSpot, a Microsoft representative said, “Support for Xbox One features on Xbox 360 titles in Backward Compatibility are in the hands of the publisher to enable.”
Backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One was announced at this year’s E3 during Microsoft’s press conference with more than 100 Xbox 360 games expected to be available when the feature officially launches later this year, including Mass Effect, Shadow Complex, and all Gears of War games. The current slate of backwards compatible titles can be found here. More will continually be added.
