Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is out right now, and there has been a LOT to break down (both good and bad) in the film. But the thing that many comic fans are freaking out about was not just the inclusion of the Illuminati (via world 838), but the fact that the Illuminati were calling out the dangers of “Incursions”, something that would eventually catch up to Stephen Strange via the mid-credits sequence where his future girlfriend in Clea showed up and stated that he had caused one and that they needed to stop it.
But…what exactly are Incursions? And do they hold relevance in the Marvel Comics world? To put it loosely, the Marvel Comics Universe stands on different planes of existence, and thus you need some magic or technology to travel between the planes to reach them. However, in the movie, the lines between those planes can be eroded away and they can thus collapse on one another, causing an Incursion that if not stopped, could wipe out one or both of the realities.
Something very similar happened in the Marvel Comics event “Time Runs Out”, which focused on the Illuminati coming together to try and stop Incursions from happening. Their plan was to blow up the Earth’s from those other universes so that they could save their own universe. They couldn’t do it at first…so one of their members, Namor, collected a team of villains who did it for them.
This all eventually led to the Secret Wars event that actually got rid of the entire Marvel Multiverse for a time, and ended with the Fantastic Four basically recreating it via the power of Franklin Richards.
It’s obviously unclear how the Doctor Strange sequel will lead into the rest of the MCU with Incursions (as only Strange knows about them currently), but if they are going to a Secret Wars climax? That would be rather awesome indeed.
