During Bungie’s final livestream for Destiny: The Taken King, the highly anticipated third expansion for Destiny, the developer revealed that the new raid, King’s Fall, will be made available on Sept. 18, 2015, just three days after the launch of The Taken King itself.
Following a demo of the Court of Oryx, a new piece of content for PvE players, creative director Luke Smith took time to introduce a short trailer that contained the Sept. 18 release date at the very end.
Bungie has stated that King’s Fall will be the largest raid the game has seen so far. That’s only comparing it to Destiny’s other two raids, Vault of Glass, which launched with the game a year ago, and Crota’s End, which was released with the game’s first expansion, The Dark Below.
The reason for the three-day delay on the launch of King’s Fall might have something to do with comments made by Smith in regards to the raid serving as a narrative conclusion to the expansion’s story.
"The name King's Fall is really like a shot across the bow in a game called The Taken King. That story of Oryx and his presence in our solar system is going to continue after the credits roll and were going to continue to tell you more about Oryx and his minions after you face them for the first time in the game. The raid is really the culmination of that story."
That being the case, if Bungie is trying to correct what was arguably the biggest disappointment about Destiny – its story – it can be understood that the developer doesn’t want to see players rush through a large piece of narrative content they have created. Whether or not that new content’s story is actually good remains to be seen.
