Love Death + Robots Volume 3 Coming May 20 to Netflix

May 9, 2022 by Blue Williams

Volume 3 is coming. Get your popcorn ready.

Volume 3 of Netflix’s Emmy award-winning anthology series, Love Death + Robots, is coming May 20 to the streaming platform. Netflix just dropped Volume 3’s official trailer this morning, and it looks to be epic. The trailer features a crew of sailors battling giant crustaceans, rats bent on revolution, lots of trippy imagery, and of course, plenty of robots and adult language.

This trailer comes on the heels of reports of major upheaval at Netflix Animation. Following highly publicized subscriber losses, the streaming service fired executives and canceled a slew of shows in its animation lineup. This includes several high-profile projects, such as the adaptation of Jeff Smith’s critically-acclaimed comic Bone, the adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic The Twits, and the Meghan Markle-created show Pearl, about a 12-year-old girl who is inspired by influential women throughout history. Despite these changes, however, Netflix is still moving forward with other titles based on popular IP, including Sonic Prime and Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight.

Love Death + Robots is an experimental anthology series billed as a reboot of the 1981 animated sci-fi film Heavy Metal. Each episode consists of standalone stories animated by different teams from around the world. The creativity and uniqueness of the series has resonated with audiences, and the title has won multiple accolades, including Emmy awards for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation.

Considering the rocky atmosphere at Netflix Animation, it’s fair to wonder whether any new animated show has much of a chance for survival on the streaming service, let alone one as off-the-wall and adult-focused as Love Death + Robots. Still, for now, sci-fi and animation fans have something exciting to look forward to.
