EA DICE has put together a new featurette on the official Star Wars Battlefront website showcasing two new pieces of artwork for the upcoming game and its pre-order map, The Battle of Jakku, which you can see above and below.
The artwork offers a first visual glimpse at the map. According to the developers, the Battle of Jakku is a pivotal moment in Star Wars history (post-Episode 6) when the New Republic confronted the Imperials on a remote desert planet. As for why the Imperials would even be fighting in space above the planet is anyone's guess.
The battle itself takes place in the aftermath of the Battle of Endor, and accordingly, players will experience the events that created the massive, battle-scarred landscape of Jakku as will be shown in the upcoming movie, The Force Awakens.
In the artwork, a Star Destroyer has crashed on the planet after losing a space battle, and its troops have evacuated the starship and engage in combat against Rebel pursuers.
The Battle of Jakku is set to feature a variety of different aspects of Star Wars warfare, both on land and in the skies.
“We wanted to portray a battle completely surrounding you, in every direction. Debris is falling from the sky, telling the story of battles above. On the surface of the planet you can see ground troops as well as X-wings, all taking part of the fight,” says DICE concept artist Anton Grandert.
“There’s a David and Goliath theme to this,” says Grandert. “The epic, huge super structures of the Star Destroyers contrast against the tiny but brave Rebel soldiers fighting the Imperial forces.”
The game will be out on November 17 for the PC, Xbox One and PS4.
