Minecraft: Story Mode Coming to Wii U

August 26, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

Now, maybe the traditional Minecraft game can come to a Nintendo platform.

Telltale Games’ next story-based episodic game Minecraft: Story Mode is coming to Wii U, the developer confirmed on Twitter after making the reveal to The Verge.

This will be the first Minecraft game to be available on a Nintendo platform, while the traditional Minecraft game has been available on virtually every other platform for some time now. This is also the first time a Minecraft game will appear on a new platform, especially a platform not owned by Microsoft, since Microsoft purchased the franchise last September.

It is uncertain if this means the traditional Minecraft game will also come to Wii U or Nintendo 3DS.

Minecraft: Story Mode will also be available on a plethora of other platforms, including Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.

In July, Mojang COO Vu Bui said that Minecraft on Wii U wasn’t something the company was actively avoiding, but rather something that “just hasn’t happened yet.”

At Minecon last month, Minecraft developer Mojang and Telltale Games released the first trailer for Story Mode, as well as the first details about the game.

Minecraft: Story Mode will feature an original, in-universe story set in the world of Minecraft. Story Mode will be played from the perspective of Jesse, voiced by Patton Oswalt. Jesse and his friends are on a mission to find the Order of the Stone, a group of people that was able to defeat the Ender Dragon, a powerful dragon that exists as a boss in the main Minecraft game for players to attempt to defeat with their friends. Other actors featured in the Story Mode cast include Cory Feldman (The Goonies, Stand by Me), Billy West (Futurama, Doug), and Paul Reubens (Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure).

Story Mode will attempt to strike a tone reminiscent of ‘80s films like The Goonies and Ghostbusters.

"There was something magical about that generation of film before the PG-13 rating became commonplace that bred an incredible body of inspiration for us," head of creative communications at Telltale Games Job Stauffer said to The Verge.

Minecraft: Story Mode was announced last December and its first episode is scheduled to be released sometime this year.
