Variable Refresh Rate Is Finally Arriving On PS5

April 26, 2022 by Matt Cook

Smooth gaming is here.

Sony has finally announced the arrival of variable refresh rate on PlayStation 5. The feature was originally promised for the PS5 before the console was even released but it has taken a year and a half to finally roll it out. Variable refresh rate will be coming to PS5 consoles in an update this week, although Sony hasn’t provided an exact date. The company did confirm that the feature will be “rolling out globally” so everyone should get to experience it at about the same time. VRR adjusts the refresh rate of a compatible TV/Monitor in real-time which makes gameplay substantially smoother. It’s especially useful in games that don’t have a locked frame rate 100% of the time. Theoretically, it should virtually eliminate stutter and screen tearing in games where it is active. We’ll have to see how Sony’s implementation works in the wild to confirm if that’s the case or not.

Accompanying the announcement that VRR will be arriving this week, Sony also announced a list of games that will receive patches to support the new feature. Check out the full list of games that will support VRR “in the coming weeks.”

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Deathloop
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

Since variable refresh rate has been on Xbox consoles for a few years now, other games will surely be updated with support on PS5 in the coming months. In order to experience the benefits of VRR, gamers will need an HDMI 2.1 TV or monitor. HDMI 2.1 has only just started making its way into TVs and it still isn’t standard across the board so it may be some time before the majority of PS5 gamers get to experience VRR.
