First Review of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Published

August 20, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

A French magazine has been the first to review MGS 5.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is slated to come out on September 1. Reviews of the game are expected before its release, but one of them has been prematurely released, far ahead of schedule.

Today, the French gaming magazine JeuxVideo Magazine published their review of the game, giving it a 17/20 score. You can see that in the photograph below. (Credit: @kevryu)

According to a translation on NeoGAF, provided by user GhostTrick, here's what they had to say about each of the game's criteria:

Gameplay – 4 out of 5 stars

The Metal Gear game with the best gameplay, and with the most possibilities even though some aren’t that useful.

Graphics – 4  out of 5 stars

Game looks clean. Although, it clearly shows its crossgen roots. Not the best looking game.

Sound – 4 out of 5 stars

A lot of tracks from the 80s and a nice sound ambiance.

Length – 4 outs of 5 stars

A long playthrough (more than 40 hours) but one that can be tedious at times.

A rich gameplay but also some tedious missions, a plot which promises so much and delivers so few, MGSV is as impressive as it leaves you unsatisfied. A good game, but one difficult to understand. Could it be Kojima’s last mystery?
