A low quality image of a Japanese language document has surfaced on the Internet, purporting to reveal the next entry in the Super Smash Bros. series. If the blurry photo is to be believed, the sequel will be called Super Smash Bros. Universe.
According to Reddit user Hector_Kur, the image originated on 4chan, and as such should be taken with a few grains of salt. If this leak is a fake, though, it's a relatively convincing one. The logos seem to be thoughtfully crafted, with the blue motif and the "U" in "Universe" borrowed from the Wii U's branding. Take a look for yourself:
Nintendo revealed during their E3 press conference that Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai would begin full development on another entry in the series after work on Kid Icarus: Uprising was completed. That game is rapidly approaching its early 2012 launch date, so early work on the next Smash game might well be underway.
As you might remember, Nintendo's announcement stated that any new Smash title would be coming to both the Wii U and the 3DS. Given the fact that this document focuses soley (and heavily) on the Wii U, each platform might be getting its own version of the game with separate branding and features. Then again, that glaring omission might just be more evidence that this leak is nothing but a clever forgery.
We've asked Nintendo for comment on the story.
