At long last, the launch trailer for Satellite Reign has been released.
This caps off the successful Kickstarter, launched in June 2013 by Syndicate Wars creator Mike Diskett. They were able to raise £ 461,333, equivalent roughly $ 72,000, but the game did receive extra funding and fan support/feedback via Early Access.
In a Kickstarter update, 5Lives Studios thanked the fans for their support:
Greetings Agents,
As some of you may already be aware, Satellite Reign is now less than two weeks from leaving Early Access, taking it into full release. Creating this title has been an amazing, unforgettable experience for us, and we owe it all to our backers. Watching the release date draw nearer is both exciting and nerve-racking, but we're optimistic that people will enjoy what we've created.
They also shared details on claiming rewards, and pointed out that localization, unfortunately, won’t be ready for launch. They are close to finishing this process, but 5Lives needs a little more time because they underestimated the scope of work needed. While gamers who don’t have English as a first language might be disappointed, at least 5Lives made the call not to make backers wait any longer.
Overall, Satellite Reign can be credited as a successful Kickstarter-developed game, that proves crowdfunding is still a legitimate avenue for indie game development, and subsequently, that gamers can still trust some crowdfund campaigns to give them the games they want. Gamers need to be discriminating in choosing crowdfunds, and know what they are signing in for, but the community shouldn’t be eager to abandon crowdfunding for games yet.
Satellite Reign will be released on August 28 2015, on Windows, OS X, and Linux.
