When it comes to adaptations…of…well…anything, it’s not just about writing a good TV or movie script (or video game script in some cases), it’s about making sure that the talent can match what fans are expecting from the character/characters in some ways. Or at the very least, embodying what it means to be that character in order to deliver a good performance. For Sonic The Hedgehog 2, they already had the voice of their blue blur and Eggman on lock. But the voices of Knuckles and Tails were a wild card…at first.
That is until it was confirmed that the voice of Tails was going to be voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who just so happens to voice Tails in the video games as well as certain animation projects. So needless to say…she’s used to the role. And when interviewed about being in the movie, she noted how happy she was to be asked to do it:
“I was thrilled beyond, beyond,” said O’Shaughnessey said. “There aren’t words that have been created yet to explain how amazing that felt. I mean, it’s just, ah! I’m over the moon, I’m so excited. And you’re right, we don’t typically get to continue those roles, and… I can’t believe it! And I’m so, so, so excited.”
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 likely won’t be the last time Colleen gets to be in the movies, as the film did an incredible $71 million dollars domestically. Which is $13 million more than the original film did (clearly Tails made up the difference!). What’s more, a third movie has already been put into the works, and who knows? Maybe Tails will get his own series! They’re giving one to Knuckles!
Either way though, fans and critics overall liked the movie, and that no doubt gives Colleen and the rest of the cast a lot of joy.
