Do you want to know how interested Square Enix is in the Nintendo NX? We think this will surprise you.
Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida has expressed interest in bringing his game to the console. Yoshida clarifies that he is also still waiting for information on when the console will be released. He also needs to talk to Nintendo about cross platform gameplay policies as well, and these talks have yet to begin. Even if this does not push through, just the fact that Yoshida is interested is a positive sign for the upcoming console.
Perhaps Yoshida sees a similar situation between Square Enix and Nintendo. Square did suffer from Final Fantasy 14’s initial failure, which led to the resignation of the company’s CEO. It took Yoshida to regroup the dev team and perform what many fans already dismissed as impossible, and turn the game around with A Realm Reborn. The game is now going strong on Windows, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4, and A Realm Reborn’s sequel, Heavensward, has also proven an unqualified success.
Nintendo has had it struggles too, with three years of consecutive losses to begin with. No change in leadership happened in the company, as the late CEO Satoru Iwata patiently dealt with quarter after quarter of disappointing performance, before finally securing a turnaround, thanks to hits like Super Smash Bros, amiibo, and most recently, Splatoon.
With Square Enix hoping to expand the userbase for Fantasy 14, the notoriously Galapagosian Nintendo fan base may prove their best prospects to expand that base. It would certainly be something else if Square Enix took root in the Nintendo NX as a prime platform for their biggest RPGs.
