Leaked video footage of The Avengers, a game that was in pre-alpha state at the recently shuttered Australian studio THQ Studio Australia in Brisbane shows off some rather fantastic gameplay of the FPS-in-development.
Players appear to take on the role of Marvel superheroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Thor in the post-apocalyptic landscape of Manhattan, the futuristic Triskelion, an alien Mothership, and the Avengers Helicarrier. Much of the first-person demo boasts working four-person multiplayer.
Iron Man has the ability to hover, melee, and perform counterattacks in addition to boasting a wide range of ranged attacks. He can defend himself with an active shield. In contrast to Iron Man, the Hulk appears to excel at parkour, with the ability to bank turn while sprinting, leap over obstacles, and perform melee combos, aerial moves, throws, and finishing moves. Likewise, Captain America can perform ledge climbs and boomerang attacks with his shield.
It remains to be seen whether the game will continue to be developed by THQ's American studios. It would be a shame if it was scrapped.
