Exciting news for fans of one of the most iconic video game series of all time. A brand new game in the classic Monkey Island franchise has today been announced. In a tweet shared by Lucasfilm Games, it has been revealed that Return To Monkey Island will be coming out this year.
The announcement tweet comes alongside a short trailer for the game, that reveals that Return To Monkey Island is a game from original lead designer Ron Gilbert, who famously collaborated on the first two Monkey Island games, alongside Dave Grossman, who will also work alongside Gilbert on this new entry into the series. Dominic Armato will also be returning for this new game as the iconic voice of the series’ hero, Guybrush Threepwood.
With two years of development presumably in the bag already, it’s exciting to see that this new game is planning to launch this year. Return To Monkey Island is being developed by Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox, which was most recently responsible for the hit point-and-click adventure Thimbleweed Park. It will be published by Devolver Digital and LucasFilm Games. According to the teaser tweet, the new game’s storyline will pick up after the events of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. Check out the teaser video below for a first look.
While there are no further details as yet on a release date (only a somewhat vague promise of “coming in 2022”), it’s fair to say that fan reaction online has been incredibly positive. Monkey Island, and its main protagonist, the very loveable but very useless Guybrush Threepwood, has an almost cult-classic status in the video game world. So the pressure will certainly be on to get this right, and expectations for the modern-day take on a Monkey Island game will, understandably, be quite high.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see when exactly the new Monkey Island game will be getting a release date. Watch this space for more news on Return To Monkey Island.
