According to one of the producers of the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, the film is to be part of a bigger “cinematic universe”. Think MCU but with Sonic and his little buddy’s roaming the land together, sounds kind of adorable.
Producer of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Toby Ascher mentioned in the production notes that the first film was just the beginning of something extraordinary, and it could possibly kick start a huge multi film franchise. Ascher said, “We’re creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to include well-known characters such as Tails and Knuckles at some point, such popular figures like these that have been creating enjoyment in games for so long now.”
Neal H. Moritz (another producer on the film) also chimed in with his thoughts, “The first Sonic film was a wonderful experience for us as filmmakers, and as movie lovers. Now, we’re even more excited to expand this world that everyone loves, adding more characters, bigger worlds, and exciting new journeys with more action and adventures. The possibilities are endless”.
Sonic has been a staple in people’s lives since 1991 and has since developed into a franchise that consists of nearly 90 games, several TV series, and now this film franchise which will soon have a third film on the horizon. Someone has been a busy little hedgehog that’s for sure. The third film is actually already in production (they don’t mess around), and with the inclusion of Tails and Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, who do we expect to appear in the third film? We speak on behalf of everyone when we say, please let it be Shadow.
On top of the film trilogy, a live-action television show revolving around Knuckles is also planned for the future, with Idris Elba reprising his role as the fan favorite. The show will air on Paramount+ and is another inkling into this “cinematic universe” that the producers mentioned, so stay tuned for that one and any updates on the upcoming third film.
