Nintendo has shared tidbits for an upcoming update for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS.
Nintendo has confirmed the long rumored addition of King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country, and Chrom from Fire Emblem Awakening, but only as Mii Fighter Costumes. If you were sincerely hoping these characters were getting added in, of course, this doesn’t rule out them being added completely, but it is quite the disappointment. There will also be a special Parka costume available for all Mii Fighter types.
Classic Smash fans should be happier with their other announcements. Peach’s Castle and Hyrule Castle are being added to the game, straight out of the Nintendo 64 original.
And now, for some key Wii U-only features. Smash Wii U is getting tournament mode, the details of which remain secret, but seem likely to allow you to run 64 character tournaments! At least that’s what’s implied from the image above.
There will also finally be replay sharing, which will include YouTube integration. No word if this will be as robust as the options in Mario Kart 8, but we expect players would rather get to upload full matches and tournaments than highlights.
Nintendo will share more details later, but the update will be arriving on July 31.
