Halo Infinite Adds Ranked Requirements to Combat Cheaters

March 24, 2022 by Carley Garcia

Another day, another attempted cheat fix.

Halo Infinite players are still waiting for Co-Op and Forge modes, but 343 Industries has a little issue to address first. As wonderful as the game’s free-to-play multiplayer has been, it’s also a major pull for cheaters, who can easily create new accounts each the old ones are banned. In a new developer blog, the dev team confirms that ongoing plans to introduce “additional friction to people creating new accounts” are going forward.

It will now be mandatory for all players to complete a certain number of multiplayer matches prior to entering ranked queues. This will (hopefully) stop potential cheaters from completely ruining ranked matches, and will also give the anti-cheat software more time to find and kick cheaters in Halo Infinite before they can complete their required matches.

“We’re currently planning to set this number at 25 games – though that may change before we enable this – as we think this not only to keeps the player out of ranked for a while but also gives our other systems a chance to detect them as a current or recurring cheater,” the blog post says.

“We’re also looking into additional ways we can identify banned players who are creating new accounts on the same device without having to rely solely on the device information that we have right now. There are a few efforts underway here and nothing, including leveraging third-party solutions in combination with our existing work on Arbiter, is off the table.”

On the first day of February, Halo Infinite Head of Creative Joseph Staten took to Twitter to announce a slight delay in the game’s 2022 roadmap, Co-Op, and Forge. As March comes to an end, no concrete announcements regarding the state of this delay have been posted. Many fans have described “zero communication” between themselves and developer 343 Industries, though blog posts are a good place to start.

Halo Infinite is available to play on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. In just over one month post-release, the game attracted 20 million players, making it the biggest launch in franchise history and the biggest Halo game in terms of players.
