During last week’s Hogwarts Legacy State of Play broadcast, Harry Potter fans were treated to 14 minutes of PlayStation 5 footage highlighting the upcoming title. From potion making and mastering spells to exploring Hogwarts via foot and broomstick, the Warner Bros. title is shaping up to be the game that fans have been dreaming of for the past two decades. The title looks to be absolutely massive both in scale and ambition, but it looks like one major piece of the HP universe might not be making the leap to PC and console when Legacy drops this holiday season.
Harry Potter has inspired a number of video games to date, all of which largely follow the titular character and events of the book series. While Quidditch is a huge part of the Wizarding World’s lore, it looks like the sport may not be coming to Hogwarts Legacy for one reason or another. While players will be able to fly on a broomstick to get around the world and participate in races with other students, playing an organized sport might be a little too much to add to an already content-heavy title.
The Quidditch pitch appears in the newest game footage, but this may just be for show. For those of us old enough to remember Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on the original PlayStation console, this may actually be a positive thing.
Hogwarts Legacy will take place a century before the book series during the late 1800s, and players will be allowed to choose their Hogwarts House and attend classes. The title is completely open-world and will include notable locales like the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Village.
Hogwarts Legacy will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. No release date has been specified, though the presentation indicates that Legacy will release this holiday season. The game is being published under Warner’s Portkey Games label and was originally scheduled to be released in 2021.
At least you’ll be able to do dark magic, right?
