The newest twist in the most iconic Battle Royale island in gaming is finally here. After much anticipation, Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 launched yesterday, and with it came lots of changes. The new season is named ‘Resistance’ and focuses is on the battle for dominance between the Imagined Order (The IO), who are trying to take over the island and The Resistance, who are, well, resisting it.
One of the most notable changes in Chapter 3 Season 2 though, is the elimination of building. It is a move that has somewhat divided the Fortnite community, with many finding themselves quite surprised by the removal of such a cornerstone of the title’s gameplay. Online commentary has varied massively on this topic, with some tweeting their admiration for such a bold move:
Whereas others have been…somewhat less impressed by it:
It’s clear that building, and the removal of it, has proved quite divisive. However, this new season is only a day old at this point, so there’s plenty of time for things to change and for building to come back on the scene.
To compensate for the inability to build, Fortnite has given players a new defensive mechanic in the Overshield. This is an additional layer of defence that sits on top of your standard shield and health bar. Your Overshield will take all initial damage and will regenerate by itself, even after dropping to zero.
Other new and notable changes in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 are some of the new player movement mechanics. Sprinting (yes, proper sprinting) has finally been introduced, alongside a new mantling skill, whereby players can mantle up vertically onto walls and ledges. This is seemingly another evolution of the improved movement mechanics brought in during last season when players were able to slide on their knees to cover distances more quickly. You can also shoulder barge your way through doors if you run at them while sprinting. Looks pretty cool but not all that stealthy.
As well as introducing new equipment and vehicles, there are a lot of new items to unlock in Season 2’s Battle Pass, including the as until now rumoured Dr Strange skin. What happens as far as building goes, we’ll just have to wait and see.
