The BBC has announced a new Doctor Who expansion of sorts coming to Fortnite, although it strangely not “sponsored, endorsed, or administered by Epic Games.” It looks like the BBC has independently brought the science fiction series to the game without it being an official collaboration. The new island allows players to visit and repair the iconic Tardis, see Cybermenm, and run from menacing Daleks. Check out the new trailer below.
According to the BBC, here’s how to play:
- Download Fortnite for free on your preferred games console or device.
- Launch the game. Click Change to access the menu.
- Press Play, then select Island Code.
- Type in code 3610-1396-4646 and press Launch to start the game.
The Global Director of Gaming at BBC Mat Way said on the new project, “Developing an island in Fortnite is new territory for Doctor Who and we’re excited to welcome the game’s established players into the Whoniverse. This is a great opportunity to introduce a gaming audience to Doctor Who and also for the existing community to experience a brand-new adventure. Players can expect a fast-paced, unpredictable journey with familiar friends and foes making appearances along the way.”
Doctor Who in Fortnite has players repair the Tardis “by finding the parts to fix the Dynamorphic generators” after a “mysterious Reality Virus” causes the time-traveling machine to land on the island. A total of five different locations will be available for players to enjoy, one of which is “Kerkblam! on the moon of Kandoka.” There, fans can engage in box fighting with a giant Kerblam Man watching over. The legendary planet of Gallifrey will also be available to visit.
While the new Doctor Who content is certainly not a fan-made project, it does beg the question, “Why is it not an official collaboration?” Gamers would definitely love to be able to purchase skins of the varying Doctors and different alien species for their characters.
