Is The MCU’s Phase 4 Actually “Phase Wong”?

March 16, 2022 by Todd Black

Sounds good to us!

Wong, Doctor Strange

Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in full effect, and at the present time is actually multiple films deep. But unlike certain previous phases, there is already a clear new “MVP” that is tying things all together: Wong. Played by Benedict Wong. Now, of course, Wong is a big part of the Doctor Strange comics, but in the MCU, especially in Phase 4, he’s been doing a lot more and has achieved a lot more.

For example, he was in Spider-Man no way home and revealed that he was the new Sorcerer Supreme due to Doctor Strange being blipped. He was also in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings where he basically recruited Shang-Chi to the Avengers…and then did an epic karaoke jam session. And now, we’re getting ready for his return via Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. And Benedict himself “admitted” that this phase was honestly all about him:

“I call it Phase Wong. It’s a nice, interesting shift. Wong has taken on a new role, and that dynamic changes between them [Wong and Strange] both.”

And others from the MCU are fine with this as well:

“I think we all just got excited about the idea of Wong. People love Wong. We love Wong,” Shang-Chi producer Jonathan Schwartz previously told ComicBook.com previously. “Benny’s the greatest, and we’re very happy with it. So we ran with the Wong of it all. We love it.”

And so as you can see, there’s a new superstar in the MCU! And based on the trailers for Multiverse of Madness, things are going to get VERY interesting and we look forward to seeing what Benedict’s character does, and how he further pushes his MCU status in the right direction.

The Multiverse of Madness arrives on May 6th.
