In the wake of the recent scandal in which professional gamers admitted to using Adderall during a competition in March, the ESL has announced that they will be cooperating with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) to implement randomized drug testing of participants during tournaments.
Kory "SEMPHIS" Friesen admitted in an interview that he and his former teammates from Cloud9 had been using Adderall while playing at ESL Katowice.
Testing for the drug will be conducted through urinalysis, where they expect to detect Adderall and other amphetamine-based performance-enhancing drugs.
Speaking to Wired, ESL said that the organization acted immediately after the allegations of doping surfaced.
“The integrity of our sport is and always will be our biggest concern. When we first saw [Friesen's comments], we focused immediately on kickstarting a policy-making process and adjusting the rules. We have worked on changes in our rules, reached out to authorities for support, and will be ready to announce our next steps in a couple of days. When that comes out, you can treat that as our full statement on the issue.”
Other e-sports organizations are expected to follow suit.
