A very unforgiving and specific bug from the original Battletoads on NES will be fixed for the version that will appear in Rare’s 30-game collection, Rare Replay, according to studio head at Rare Craig Duncan.
"We're aware of the bug," said Duncan at the developer's San Diego Comic-Con panel today when a fan asked about the bug. "It's part of Battletoads legend. We have a way of fixing it, so it is something that's on our final bug list."
The bug to which they are referring appeared when playing the two-player mode of Battletoads on NES. Once the two players reached the 11th level of the game, called Clinger Winger, the second player’s controls would stop working, leaving the player unable to move. The only way around this bug was to have the second player deplete the rest of their remaining life stock, so that player one could continue.
Fixing this bug was, apparently, a topic of discussion at Rare. On one side of the argument was that fixing the bug would remove some of its “authenticity.” On the other was the argument that Battletoads is difficult enough as it is.
“We wanted to maintain the authenticity of these games,” Duncan said. But, “to answer the question directly, yes, we’re gonna fix it.”
Battletoads will be one of 30 Rare games being released on August 4, 2015 as part of Rare Replay on Xbox One.
