A new Proton update is coming to the Steam Deck which will make Elden Ring run smoother and fix a stuttering issue that many users have been experiencing. Lucky customers who were in the first batch of pre-orders for Valve’s new portable PC have been receiving the console over the past week so naturally, updates are now being released for various games. Elden Ring is a particularly important title for the Steam Deck at the moment as it was only released last Friday and premiered to rave reviews from critics and gamers. The ability to portably play the FromSoftware game will be a huge selling point for many people. Optimizing the mega-popular title for the Steam Deck will be a priority for Valve.
The coming Elden Ring improvements were announced by Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais via Twitter. Griffais said yesterday on the upcoming update, “The graphics team has been hard at work on optimizing ELDEN RING for Steam Deck. Fixes for heavy stutter during background streaming of assets will be available in a Proton release next week, but are available to test now on the bleeding-edge branch of Experimental.” An exact release date for the update has not been disclosed by Valve, but Griffais has shared it should be available this week. Although, the developer did say the update is currently accessible in beta mode for any players keen to try it out.
Valve has promised that the Steam Deck will support a massive amount of games, with over 100 titles in the Steam library already optimized. More games continue to be added all the time as well. If Valve succeeds, gaming will look very different in a few years with almost any AAA title able to be played on the go.
Elden Ring is also available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC.
