SEGA Admits it Needs to Regain Fan Trust

July 22, 2015 by Stephen Daly

Company says it has learned from Atlus and vows to make quality console games.

Correction: Famitsu's interview was conducted with Haruki Satomi, the CEO of SEGA Games. We previously reported that the interview took place with SEGA-SAMMY Holdings' CEO Hajime Satomi.

"Seeing our fans across the world respond to our recent interview with Famitsu, lets us know we've made the right first step in acknowledging who we are and where we want to be. SEGA is dedicated to bringing you quality gaming experiences and becoming a brand you love and trust again," Haruki Satomi said in a new update regarding the interview.

Original Story: SEGA's CEO and President Hajime Satomi has said fans of the company have had their trust betrayed in recent years, and has vowed to improve the quality of its console games, potentially beginning with the announcement of a new title at the Tokyo Game Show.

Speaking to Famitsu, via Siliconera, Satomi spoke about the disappointment of fans with recent releases by the company.

"We did our best to build a relationship of mutual trust with older fans of SEGA," Satomi said, "but looking back, there've been some titles that have partially betrayed that [trust] in the past 10 years."

He added, "SEGA in the '90s was known for its brand, but after that, we've lost trust, and we were left with nothing but reputation. For this reason, we'd like to win back the customers' trust, and become a 'brand,' once again."

Given Satomi's new commitment to quality, he says they may have a console game announcement to make at the Tokyo Game Show.

"Since we're seriously considering quality, I can't make that promise for the time being, but I believe we will announce something for home console at Tokyo Game Show."

The executive added that SEGA has learned a lot following its acquisition of Atlus, “As far as the Western market goes, we learned a lot from Atlus. If we can make a title with proper quality, I believe there’s a good chance for it to do well even in the West for players that like to play Japanese games.”
