The new Uncharted movie was released this past weekend on February 18 and dominated the box office, bringing in $44 million over three days. The movie, based on the popular game franchise, had the fourth-biggest opening for a video game ever. This is after Sonic the Hedgehog with $58 million, Detective Pikachu with $54 million, and Tomb Raider with $47 million.
Uncharted premiered during the four-day long President’s Day weekend in the US and is predicted to make $51 million throughout that time. While the movie didn’t quite thrill critics, audiences seem to be thoroughly enjoying the game adaptation. The critics’ score for Uncharted on Rotten Tomatoes is currently sitting at a dismal 39% but the audience score is at an approving 90%. These numbers signify the action movie will, in all likelihood, continue to do well in the days and weekends ahead.
Ruben Fleischer, director of Uncharted, has already voiced ideas for a sequel. The man behind Zombieland has mentioned that the next Uncharted film could feature the iconic car chase scene first seen in the Uncharted 4 game. Uncharted isn’t the only game franchise Fleischer has his eyes on. The director has also mentioned an interest in making a movie based on Sony’s popular Jak and Daxter game franchise.
The recently released Uncharted movie stars heavy-hitters such as Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter), and Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro). The film is based on the mega-popular Uncharted game series developed by Naughty Dog. The first game in the series, Drake’s Fortune launched in 2007 with the most recent installment, The Lost Legacy, released in 2017. A new Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is due to launch this year and will include Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
