Reggie: PS4. Xbox One Still At Early Stages, Time Frame For Eight Gen Consoles Will Be Long

June 19, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Reggie also shared some ideas on what Nintendo will be considering for their mobile games.

Reggie Fils-Aime fielded questions about the Wii U, NX, and mobile games in a new interview.

Reggie was mainly interviewed about the deal for the special Donkey Kong and Bowser Skylanders amiibo. He explained that it was Activision that approached them about the collaboration, having approached Nintendo with the idea of Skylanders in the first place. Amiibo themselves have sold over 10.5 million units, and Nintendo is working to increase the pace they manufacture them to catch up to still unmet demand.

Reggie was specifically asked about the current state of the Wii U, in comparison to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and how they outpaced it. Reggie stated that the time frame for eight generation consoles will be long, and the Wii U’s competitors are only at their early stages.

Reggie also stated that Nintendo sees Wii U having a strong presence in the US, Europe, and Japan, something their competitors can’t claim (alluding to the Xbox One). Reggie also referred to the next Nintendo home console, but stated that Nintendo would be taking about it more at a later date, bolstering his claim that this generation of consoles has just started.

Finally, regarding mobile games, Reggie said he cannot make any specific statements. He did explain that among the considerations Nintendo is making is whether the game will be free to start, if it will have in-game transactions, or if it will have a single set price.

By using the term free to start, Nintendo alludes to offering more of the game upfront, and the in-game transactions may not necessarily be microtransactions so much as they split up parts of the game based on full retail price. So, even on mobile, Nintendo may still be going their own way.

Does Reggie’s statements give you confidence Nintendo will support the Wii U a little longer? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
