Ubisoft shared a preview of the Dark Zone in Tom Clancy’s The Division. Interestingly, it sets up a dark narrative that doesn’t just fit in, but defines the uncertain scenario of the game.
In the preview, the team comes in to the dark zones to try to get some loot. The dark zones are not underground, but parts of the city where apparently your superiors in the government agency have spotty contact with you. In this so-called dark zone, radio contact gets reset and no rules apply. This preview establishes that we are listening to a team of four communicating with each other via voice chat, and all four agree to enter the dark zone.
The team approaches a group of thugs guarding a crate, but before they get there, they see another team of players.
After a few tense moments, they decide to team up when the other team points their guns at the thugs. The second team loses people, but they take the thugs out. The first team then goes to the crate to pick up items, and the second team follows their lead. It’s established here that different teams do not get to communicate with each other.
Then, they see a bunch of armed Cleaners, and the first team opts to pass over them completely as they are completely outmatched.
The two teams make their way to a helipad for extraction. As the helicopter comes down, the first team decides to take out the other, overwhelming them with three versus two odds.
However, a twist occurs here. One team member goes stiff, and suddenly decides to go rogue on them. He kills his former team members and runs off, causing the extraction to fail.
After the presentation, Ubisoft revealed that Tom Clancy’s The Division would be having an open beta next year and will be released on March 2016. Both will occur simultaneously for all available platforms, Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
