GTA Trilogy Getting Review Bombed On Metacritic

November 15, 2021 by Matt Cook

The GTA Trilogy chaos continues.

The GTA Trilogy has been getting trashed by gamers left, right, and center since it came out last week. Now, Metacritic is being dragged into the uproar over Rockstar’s troubled game. The GTA Trilogy has been hit so hard by user reviews on Metacritic that it is now rated 0.5/10 for multiple platforms. That puts it among the lowest-rated user-reviewed games ever on Metacritic.

The term “review bombing” is usually reserved for when something gets slammed with disingenuous bad reviews. The Last of Us 2 comes to mind in that regard. However, it’s hard to argue with the negative reviews that the GTA Trilogy has been receiving from users. This seems less of a case of “review bombing” and more like users expressing genuine frustration at a bad game. The GTA Trilogy may technically be getting “review bombed” but at least it’s for the right reasons. The critic reviews for the GTA Trilogy are slightly better; it currently holds a 64/100 for the PlayStation 5 version of the game. Other platforms haven’t received aggregate scores yet, but looking at those critic reviews paints a similar picture to the user reviews.

The Nintendo Switch version of the game only has two critic reviews up to now but they are both 40/100 with Nintendolife even recommending to avoid the Nintendo Switch version of the game altogether if possible. The Switch version of the game has been criticized even more than its other console brethren. The remaster on the Nintendo Switch has been described as unplayable because of how unoptimized it is. Ars Technica described the Nintendo Switch version of the game as follows, “Whether played in portable or docked modes, each of the trilogy’s games performs terribly, with frequent drops into the 20 fps range and noticeable stuttering into the low 10s.”

In response to the overall negativity the GTA Trilogy has received, the CEO of Grove Street Games has promised that they will be updating the game. Details on what the updates may include have yet to be revealed.
