Apex Legends continued to amass popularity throughout 2021, becoming one of the most-discussed games on Twitter for the year. The free-to-play battle royale is starting out the new year with a bang, as Respawn has unveiled the Dark Depths Event scheduled to begin on January 11. The underwater-themed addition will continue through February 1 and will bring tons of cosmetics, rewards, and a brand-new Arenas map called ‘Habitat.’ Ahead of the introduction of Dark Depths next Tuesday, a trailer has been posted to the official YouTube channel.
During the three-week event period, players will be able to complete three separate reward trackers, with each offering a set of unique collectibles from Apex Packs and Holosprays to Skins. Forty new collectibles, including a range of Legendary & Epic tier skins, will be available to snag, and Dark Depths bundles will be available to purchase for Apex Coins on the in-game store. Players will be able to purchase themed cosmetics including Legendary skins for Ash, Horizon, Fuse, and Lifeline.
The new Arenas map, Habitat, is aiming to be the perfect battleground for fans of the 3v3 mode, with plenty of elevated and hidden positions. The map caters to long-range players or those who prefer to act more stealthily.
While some players are excited about the new offerings, longtime players have begun to lament the title’s lack of additional content, with many continuing the popular mantra of “cosmetics aren’t content.” Apex hasn’t seen a new Limited Time Mode in over nine months–a bad look for a live service game.
Apex Legends is available to download on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The game supports cross-play and will be released on iOS and Android devices in 2022. The free-to-play battle royale-hero shooter has seen huge success since its release in 2019, surpassing 25 million players by the end of its first week. In April 2021, Apex Legends had approximately 100 million players. The game saw a bump in popularity upon the release of Season 11: Escape in October 2021, which introduced Titanfall’s Ash as a new Legend along with the new Storm Point map.
