DICE’s support for Battlefield 4 continues, as they have just teased the CTE coming to Xbox One.
The CTE, or community test environment, was originally announced only for Windows last year. It allows developers to test out certain features and changes before deploying it to all players.
In a tweet, a DICE LA Engineer shared a pic of the CTE in action. While he did not name it outright, he clarified in follow up tweets that these were neither developer kits nor developer software, but regular Xbox One consoles you can get at retail. He also went out of his way to indicate they were connected to the internet.
The original PC Battlefield 4 CTE launched only for Battlefield 4 Premium members, so a similar provision will probably be in place for the Xbox One Battlefield 4 CTE. In this case, EA may make the launch exclusive to EA Access subscribers before letting anyone sign up.
Now, you may be asking yourself, why would DICE even bother bringing back the CTE, and why only for Xbox One? But I think EA DICE has a good reason, and that reason is DirectX 12. In a few months’ time, Battlefield 4 on Xbox One may be the best looking version of the game on console. At the very least, DICE will learn optimizations specific to the console they will be able to use in future games – like Star Wars Battlefront 3?
