Mario Kart fans have been enjoying the franchise since the days of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Unfortunately, the game series hasn’t seen a new mainline installment for nearly a decade. It’s a tough go for fans, but there’s a reason to keep Mario Kart 8 Deluxe going for Nintendo. Recently, it’s been unveiled that the Mario Kart 8 installment has now become the best-selling installment in franchise history.
Coming in at over 38 million units sold, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe might be sticking around longer. With so many newcomers still picking the installment up, it’s not surprising to see Nintendo hold off on a new mainline installment. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing new coming out in general. We had Mario Kart Tour for mobile devices along with a spin-off Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. Still, if you wanted a full-on mainline game, you’re left with just Mario Kart 8 Deluxe right now.
Fortunately, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe installment is quite a solid entry. It’s certainly one of the first big exclusive titles to pick up for a Nintendo Switch if you’re new to the platform. The problem some players might be having with the game is because this is an installment that initially came out on the Nintendo Wii U. While that console didn’t last very long, Nintendo did bring out a revamped edition for the Switch. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen anything new for the game since the Deluxe edition was released.
For players wanting to dive into the game for the first time, it’s a great and thrilling experience. Unfortunately, for those playing this game for years, we haven’t seen any expansions come out. As a result, fans have been hopeful a Mario Kart 9 might be coming out soon. But since the game has continued to thrive with units constantly being picked up, there might not be much of a push to get another new mainline installment out quite yet.
