Update:
Green Man Gaming has now removed their discount for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on their site. Assuming they were telling the truth, this merely means they will accept no more losses on matching GOGcom's discount for the game. You can see them offering the game full price here.
Original story follows below.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt seems to be brewing some controversy behind the scenes, as it seems CD Projekt RED is pushing for their publishing platform, GOGcom, hard.
This issue is not new, but it comes with a twist. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is bound to be censored in some regions. However, you can avail of an uncensored version so long as you buy a code for the game directly from GOGcom itself, rather than buy elsewhere to redeem from GOGcom.
Consider this situation for a minute. While The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is also available on Steam, Valve is bound by regional agreements to enforce laws. For this reason, some games aren’t available in some regions. For this reason, Steam versions of the game are guaranteed to be censored if that’s how games are distributed in said region.
This other case is even more contentious. CD Projekt RED claimed that they did not know where retailer Green Man Gaming was obtaining their digital keys for the game. They stated that they were getting zero revenue from Green Man Gaming, and discouraged fans from buying them.
Green Man Gaming responded to these allegations, claiming that they and CD Projekt RED could not reach a deal regarding distribution, so they have been shut out completely. Green Man Gaming decided to buy digital copies from other retailers that CD Projekt RED did approve, and swallowing discounts themselves.
In both cases, CD Projekt RED stands accused of putting GOGcom on top of other stakeholders. Do you think they should give further clarification on these issues? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
