Rockstar Games has updated their EULA to confirm they have banned all modding in Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC, for both single player and multiplayer.
The truth is, this is a repeat of their position from only last January. Rockstar did a blanket sweep then and banned everyone who played the game with mods, no exceptions.
Rockstar gave mods a try in the past few months, but may have finally decided that supporting it was no longer sustainable. It did come to light that modders were ruining the Grand Theft Auto Online experience, so much so that cheaters could kill off other players’ avatars by making them commit suicide.
We know that the latest patch rendered Script Hook V unusable, and this one action also rendered all script mods unusable. We just did not know then if Rockstar intended to do so.
Of course, fans are expressing their displeasure at this turn of events, on Reddit and the Steam reviews page. However, ultimately, they may not be bothering Rockstar much for very long. Dedicated servers for modded Grand Theft Auto 5 games may be coming soon with FiveM. As of now, development on FiveM is right on schedule.
Ultimately, Rockstar did fans a disservice by not communicating with fans more openly and clearly about their concerns and progress regarding mods. Fans were guaranteed to dislike this decision, but they could have mitigated reaction with a brief, clear cut announcement that they were banning mods and why they were doing so. As it is, fans had to piece it together with evidence that was circulating online.
