This is a guide on how to fix issues and bugs for GTA 5 on PC.
Please note, much of this is a preventive guide, so even if you have not run into any issues with the game so far, you will want to browse through it so you know what causes the most common issues..
Crashes
· Finish the prologue before attempting a benchmark test. Otherwise, the game will crash.
· If your game does not open on an Intel laptop, follow these instructions:
o For Nvidia:
1. Open Device Manager.
2. Go to Display Adapters.
3. Disable Nvidia Device.
4. Start the game launcher.
5. Reenable Nvidia Card. You need to do this while the launcher is up but not after the full game has loaded.
o For AMD:
1. Open Device Manager.
2. Go to Display Adapters.
3. Disable Intel Device.
· If you do not have the Steam version, and you are encountering the “Failed to loab zlib” issue, that was a corrupted file that was not downloaded properly. Follow these steps to fix it:
1. Download WinMD5 here.
2. Match all your .rpf file checksums to these. Delete any. rpf files that do not match these checksums.

3. Run the GTA 5 Setup tool that should be in your downloads folder and choose repair.
4. Start GTA 5 so that the launcher redownloads the corrupted file you just deleted.
· If you have the Steam version, and you are having problems with the launcher, you can download an alternative launcher. This is apparently the same file from Rockstar’s site. You can download the file from here, and use the password n2wf.
Social Club
· If Steam tells you the game is encrypted, restart Steam.
· There is also a Game Ready Driver for Nvidia cards just for the game. You can get it from the GeForce Experience app, or get it here. Of course, you don’t want to try installing this and the game at the same time.
· Installing requires 120 GB. If you run out of storage, follow these steps:
1. Delete C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\depotcache
2. Restart Steam.
3. Verify game cache.
4. Download the uncrypted files.
· There is a now commonly known issue for Steam users who have usernames with characters other than the numerals 0 to 9 and the letters a t o z, capitalized and not capitalized. Valve and Rockstar are fixing it now, but if you don’t want to wait, you can create an Administrator user Account for your Windows PC that use only the numerals 0 to 9 and the letters a t o z, capitalized and not capitalized. Follow these instructions for Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 and 8.1.
· If you are migrating from your PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, there is an outstanding issue with losing vehicles. Follow these steps to ensure your data all carries over:
1. Enter GTA Online on your PS3 or Xbox 360. If you have not played in a long time, you will be prompted to accept a Title Update.
2. Pause the game
3. Scroll to the “ONLINE” tab
4. Select the “Leave GTA Online” option
5. The game will now save on the latest Title Update, and your vehicles will now transfer properly to PC.
Framerate
· If you are only running the game at 30 FPS, check if V-sync is set to half. If not, follow these steps:
1. Download Debugview from Microsoft here.
2. Open Debugview and then run the game.
3. Press the alt and tab buttons together to launch Debugview. From here, you can see any repeating looping codes.
4. Once you’ve identified any looping codes, kill them.
· If you are a victim of a memory leak, the only way to clear memory completely is to restart your computer.
· If you have any Nvidia GPU, remember to enable SLI after every update.
· If you have any Nvidia GPU and stuttering issues, you can try turning off Shader cache from the Nvidia control panel and disabling V-sync in-game.
· If you have an Nvidia GTX 970, we have two recommended settings:
o Setup 1: All Maximum Levels except for Advanced. If you run across frame drops, alt+enter.
o Setup 2:
o Grass Quality to Very High
o Extended Distance Scaling and Extended Shadows Distance to Minimum
o High Resolution Shadows to Minimum
o FXAA from MSAA
o Shadow Quality to High (if you do this, you can enable 2x MSAA)
Textures
· If you have a Radeon R9 280X, you may be getting a black box on the lower right corner of the screen. To remove this, disable MSAA.
Controls
· Unfortunately, there is currently no fix for mouse acceleration. This is dependent on your framerate.
· Dualshock 4 controllers have native support. Just make sure you are not already inside the game when you plug in.
If you have no problems with the game, but you want to optimize its performance, check out our guide to maximize the game’s framerate here.
