The official announcement wasn’t coming up until later today, but the cat is already out of the bag: Lego Dimensions is Warner Bros Interactive’s answer to Skylanders and Disney Infinity.
The game leans closer to those games than to amiibo as well. Its Starter pack comes with a disc copy of the game, a Lego Toy Pad, figures for Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle, and a Lego Batmobile vehicle.
It’s notable that the Batmobile has its own base, so these NFC figures do not appear to be ordinary Legos that can be attached together or work with other Lego toys and playsets. On the other hand, the Lego Toy Pad does appear to have Lego’s characteristic pegs, so we may need to wait for the official press release for more details on that point.
This poster for the Wii U version leaked out first, but listings for the game have also appeared for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
Our source teases other properties from Warner and Lego, including the Delorean from Back to the Future, Wonder Woman, and Ninjago.
Between Warner and Lego, Lego Dimensions certainly has more than enough popular IP to give Skylanders, Disney Infinity, and amiibo a run for their money, although their entry may not necessarily be welcome in an increasingly crowded market. Lego Star Wars would also seem to be an interesting sticking point between Lego Dimensions and Disney Infinity, but I personally would not rule out both lines releasing both figures in time for the release of the next movie.
