2013’s Tomb Raider Reboot Now the Franchise’s Most Successful Game

April 6, 2015 by Stephen Daly

Sales of Lara Croft’s origin story have topped 8.5 million.

Developer Crystal Dynamics has announced that their 2013 reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise has become the series' most successful entry to date, selling more than 8.5 million copies.

The game, originally released in March 2013 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, was released in January 2014 as Tomb Raider Definitive Edition for PS4 and Xbox One. The game was also later launched on Mac.

“Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players,” said Darrell Gallagher, studio head at Crystal Dynamics. “Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game.”

Publisher Square Enix initially predicted sales of up to six million units during the game's launch month; in the event, the game shifted 3.4 million copies during that period. Nevertheless, Tomb Raider eventually generated a profit and Square Enix announced sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider at E3 last year.
