Rise of the Tomb Raider: Microsoft is Offering Hardware Development Expertise

February 25, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Microsoft is offering hardware development expertise for the game’s developers.

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are using Microsoft's expertise on Rise of the Tomb Raider for more than just marketing purposes. Square Enix executive Darrell Gallagher said that the company is working with Microsoft on development in addition to marketing and retail support.

Speaking to GameInformer, Gallagher says that Microsoft is providing development support to the Crystal Dynamics team making the game, along with ahrdware-specific expertise for the Xbox One and Xbox 360, where it's exclusive to. The exclusivity deal itself may have cost Microsoft $10 million.

The exec also expressed the Square Enix's long-standing partnership with Microsoft since the release of Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Gallagher also disclosed some of the details about the previous game's sales, and how they proved that the series was successful well beyond its initial launch period.

Despite their partnership with Microsoft, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have maintained that the exclusivity for Rise of the Tomb Raider was a timed one, so there's a good chance that the game will see release on the PC and PS4 at some point in the future.

Recently, Square Enix released some new screenshots of the game. You can check them out here.
