Naughty Dog has confirmed they are unlikely to make any new cartoony games, such as Jak and Daxter, and especially Crash Bandicoot, anytime soon.
This comes from ND animator Josh Sherr, who worked on those games, and was part of Naughty Dog’s natural evolution when they made the shift into realistic animation.
When asked if the team missed making cartoony games, Sherr stated that the team is doing a lot of good work with the realistic style, creating some very expressive performances. Sherr explained that the developer has also shifted philosophically, into making games which are more grounded in reality and are far more mature.
While Sherr confirms that they are more interested in telling stories like those in Uncharted and The Last Of Us, it has been partly dictated by what the market wants as well.
It’s hard to argue with Naughty Dog on these counts, as Uncharted and The Last Of Us have both proven to be among their most popular games, as well as the most critically acclaimed. Uncharted as a franchise has sold over 19 million, and The Last Of Us, 7 million.
