Anthony Burch, Borderlands 2's lead writer, has left the studio to work on Hulu original series, RocketJump.
Burch, announcing the news on his Twitter feed, commented, Uh so I'm moving to LA to be head writer on this show. I'll miss Gearbox a LOT but uh yeah this could be really fun."
In a followup tweet, he added, "I'm still gonna do videogames stuff on the side," but it's not known if he's currently involved in any projects.
Based on RocketJump’s YouTube series Video Game High School, the new Hulu original will expand on Freddie Wong and RocketJump’s short films. The show, which will consist of half-hour episodes, will chronicle the filmmaking behind RocketJump’s newest short.
A press release announcing the show commented, "With over 7 million subscribers and over 1 billion video views, RocketJump has established themselves as one of the premier creators of award-winning digital content. Their breakout action comedy YouTube series Video Game High School generated over 84 million views within just its first two seasons, and was named Variety’s best web series of 2013."
This all begs the question of who is going to write Borderlands 3. While Burch is open to working on video game projects going forward, it seems likely Gearbox will task someone else with delivering the next instalment of the franchise.
Gearbox recently revealed The Handsome Collection, which includes Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel for PS4 and Xbox One.
