Xbox 360 Is Best-Selling 7th-Gen Console in US, Another Xbox One Promotion Begins Tomorrow

January 15, 2015 by Tony Ponce

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was the best-selling game of 2014.

It's NPD time again, but ironically, the most fascinating piece of news doesn't relate to the lineup of PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U. It looks like Xbox 360, first released on November 22, 2005, has at long last become the best-selling seventh-generation home console in the US, dethroning Nintendo's Wii. I guess slow and steady won out after all!

Xbox One did some heavy lifting as well, being the best-selling home console in December as well as selling more software during the months of November and December than either of its competitors. To celebrate, Microsoft will have another promotion beginning tomorrow in which Xbox One will once more be $349.99. Why not just make that price permanent, Microsoft?

PlayStation 4 finished off the year as the best-selling console in the US and worldwide in 2014. Even Wii U closed out the year strong, increasing over last December's sales by around 29%, which would put it well above 600K.

In addition to the top 10 games for December, we also have the top 10 for all of 2014. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare predictably took the crown, but it's surprising that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & Nintendo 3DS came in at #6, despite releasing on fewer platforms than every other title on the list.
