Super Systems Softworks has launched a Kickstarter for what may be the 1st major discovery crowdfund. Introducing Drift Stage, an arcade racer with an eye to paying homage to all eras of the genre.
Whether you were a fan of early ‘80s sprite racers, such as Pole Position and Hang On, or the later early polygonal games, including Ridge Racer, Daytona USA, Cruis’n USA, and so many others, Drift Stage is sure to scratch that itch.
While ‘90s Arcade Racer sought to recreate a particular aesthetic from a specific era, Drift Stage creates its own, by combining 3D modeling with pixel art, and a wonderfully bright, vibrant color palette.
Outside of aesthetics, the game also adopts arcade racing’s signature mechanic, drifting. Timing those turns could make the difference between leading the pack and ending up dead last.
You may have already gotten a taste of this game, as the demo went somewhat viral over the past week. If you still haven’t downloaded and given it a try, you can get it for your OS of choice (Windows/Mac/Linux) here.
The game currently has six cars and one track, and of course the devs hope to expand on that with funding. They will also include requisite modes such as time trial, career mode, daily challenges, and infinite drift, which offers checkpoint racing on a randomly generated track.
You can help fund the game here, and you may very well want to, as it has already hit half its initial goal of $ 30,000 and seems a safe bet to getting funded and produced. With that in mind, additional stretch goals shouldn't be far from the horizon, including possibly ports to your console of choice? Make sure to let them know when you fund it.
