Tony Hawk revealed in yesterday’s CES that he will have a game coming out on the PlayStation 4 this year.
Tony was actually at CES to demo Sony’s Ultra HD camera, designed to challenge the GoPro. Being part of Sony’s conference, Tony did not reveal if his next game would be coming out on any other platforms, and he did not share more details, for that matter.
The Tony Hawk Pro Skater series have been one of the most popular and iconic sports games of the 2000s, and have always been multiplatform, but closely associated with PlayStation. The first game came out in 1999 on PlayStation, N64, Dreamcast, Game Boy Color, and even the Nokia N-Gage. Not counting the spinoffs, the last major iteration of the game,Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground, in 2007.
The Tony Hawk Pro Skater series is famous for being an annualized franchise, and didn’t miss coming out with a game (in the main series or spinoff) until 2011. However, it was partly a victim of its success, as Neversoft and other developers simply ran out with ideas to change up the Tony Hawk formula.
Outside of Proving Ground, the last major release is arguably Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, a remaster that incorporated elements from the first two games. It came out on Steam, PS3, and Xbox 360 in 2012.
Perhaps the passage of time was all that was needed for the franchise to feel fresh again, or should it have more? Do you think Activision needs to do something fresh to Tony Hawk Pro Skater, or will the jump to 8th generation consoles be enough? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
