MMORPGs can foster both the worst and the best sides from the human element. For this story, we reflect upon one amazing event put together by Final Fantasy 14 players.
Since Friday night, one Final Fantasy 14 player – whose character was named Codex Vahlda – had been braindead in this hospital as a consequence of renal failure. Vahlda's real-life counterpart had been kept alive so family members and friends could say goodbye. While Vahlda's player had a donor lined up in the form of his brother, apparently the odds were against Vahlda from the start.
Redditor Pattmyn originally posted about the situation.
"For those asking – he's passing away far before his time (only 29 years old) of complications from renal failure. The odds were one in a million something like this could have happened; Everything was otherwise under control and a donor was lined up already (his brother)."
Other players on the server lined up to pay respects to the Vahlda, as documented by these photos:
Many of these photos reflect some of the very best tenets of MMORPGs. You become close to those you play with. There was a time in World of Warcraft where I considered those I played with my very best friends. The same could be said for the time I spent in Runescape. While my MMORPG days might be behind me, I fully understand what these men and women feel for Vahlda. In some ways, losing a friend that you've never met in real life is more tragic than otherwise.
Rest in peace, Codex Vahlda.
