Larian Studios' head dev Swen Vincke has written at length and in earnest about Divinity: Original Sin. Along the way, he reveals plans to finally expand the size of the Belgium-based company.
Surprisingly, he has harsh words for this popular, original creation. He agrees that the story, combat, UIs, dialogues, character progression, loot, and companion systems all need work.
Swen is basing this on customer feedback, and concedes that he actively made compromises on the game's vision because of his team's size. It wasn't that the team couldn't make the game with the quality they wanted it to have on their own, but compounded with the need for iteration, and getting the game out on time, Larian had to cut back on setting, so they trimmed down the game's overall ambition.
The bigger team will work on improvements for the game across the board. However, on top of that, they will also be working on more RPGs, and Swen confirms that there will be multiple projects on the way.
They are setting up shop in small business-friendly Quebec, Canada, and explain that in spite of all the precautions they are taking, this move also comes with a lot of risks. For Swen and the rest of Larian, however, this is simply a necessary next step, not just for Divinity: Original Sin, but for the developer and its future.
