Konami UK has confirmed that Metal Gear Online will be part of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, essentially serving as that game’s online multiplayer mode.
Metal Gear Online was originally revealed in last weekend’s The Game Awards. This is actually Kojima’s third attempt at translating the Metal Gear world to online multiplayer. This time, it is based on The Phantom Pain’s gameplay elements and new features.
The game focuses on squad based tactics, and comes with a class system so that different players can use different abilities. Many of Metal Gear’s original characters, including Ocelot and Venom Snake, will also make an appearance in this mode as well.
It is interesting that Konami goes out of its way to tout Metal Gear Online as a separate game. While they are bundling the game in as well, does this hint at the possibility Konami or Kojima may sell the game separately in the future?
