Tai Yasue has given a different answer now to adding Star Wars and Marvel characters in Kingdom Hearts 3. Fans can be a little more hopeful, but nothing’s set in stone.
Yasue’s words are that Marvel and Star Wars are not off limits. Therefore, they are definitely under consideration. However, the Kingdom Hearts team will not be adding them into the game just because they want to use them, or even because the fans want to see them.
Yasue explains that with Disney’s extended universe of IPs, many of which have multiple universes within themselves, they have to be discriminating. They need Kingdom Hearts 3 to be original, so one consideration is making sure the different worlds are not too much like each other.
What this means is each world they pick has to have something in it that the devs can connect to the game’s plot. Case in point, the Castle of Dreams is in Birth by Sleep because the characters learn something from Cinderella.
Another less obtuse consideration is gameplay. Looking at a game world, they have to think if that world will have fun gameplay. Considering that Square Enix has managed to bring in Winnie the Pooh and Sleeping Beauty to the games, they are not lacking for creativity in that regard.
