According to a recent report from Gamespot, the Playstation 4 and Xbox One are significantly outpacing their predecessors. The information Gamespot has acquired comes from game retailer Gamestop, and denotes a huge market shift towards the eighth-generation consoles.
The PS4 and Xbox One both launched in November of last year. The installed number of players using these consoles is currently 73 percent greater than the Xbox 360 and PS3 base of the same time. This is a dramatic change, and shows that more people have become interested in gaming since the last console cycle.
Apparently, Gamestop's success has correlated directly with the rise of these new consoles. The retailer saw a 147.4 percent rise over the same period of time, which can only mean good things for the company's pocketbook. Gamestop has tried to offer gamers more money for their trade-ins recently, which seems long overdue. This might have been spurred by the enhanced profits the company is seeing.
Unsurprisingly, software sales fell by a hefty 34.4 percent. While the PS4 and Xbox one might be outpacing last generation's consoles, there's still a huge number of players who haven't made the move over yet. With last year's blockblusters – The Last of Us, Grand Theft Auto 5, etc – still heavy on our minds, we're just waiting for the first monumental release via the new consoles.
It's only a matter of time before the PS4 and Xbox One catch up. We're stoked to see where this new generation of console technology will take us.
